Neophytes of Fuerteventura, Islas Canarias (ES)


Fuerteventura is the second largest island of the Canarian Archipelago (ES). The surface of the island is 1725 km², the climate is arid. The current flora contains some 780 species, of which 120 species originate from distant continents. Common alien weeds of irrigated gardens are Bidens pilosa, Conyza sumatrensis, Cyperus spp., Dichondra micrantha, Oxalis pes-caprae, Parietaria judaica, Salpichroa origanifolia and Sesuvium portulacastrum. Trees running wild are for instance Caesalpinia spinosa, Casuarina equisetifolia, Schinus molle and Schinus terebinthifolius. The Australian aliens Acacia cyclops, Atriplex semilunaris, and Maireana brevifolia are also considered invasive.
