Identification methods for Bursaphelenchus species
Reliable methods for the differentiation of Bursaphelenchus xylophilus (EPPO A1 quarantine pest) from other Bursaphelenchus species associated with pine trees are essential for quarantine purposes. A molecular technique using RFLP analysis of the amplified internal transcribed spacer region of ribosomal DNA (ITS-RFLP) has been successfully developed to differentiate between: Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, B. mucronatus, B. fraudulentus, B. leoni and B. sexdentati. This method could also differentiate between the 2 intraspecific forms of B. mucronatus.
