Studies on possible infestations by Bursaphelenchus species on wood imports
In the state of Brandenburg, Germany, since the 1990s, imports of wood, wood chips and bark from non-European Union countries and from other parts of Germany have been tested for possible infestations by pine wood nematode (Bursaphelenchus xylophilus – EPPO A1 quarantine pest) and other related species of nematodes. More than 1500 import consignments of wood and wood products from eastern Europe and the Asian part of Russia were sampled. The nematode Bursaphelenchus mucronatus was found only in 10 imports. In addition, B. mucronatus was found in one sample of Pinus round wood and one sample of Pinus wood chips from the eastern part of Germany. B. xylophilus has never been found.
