Xylella fastidiosa detected on Catharanthus roseus in Brazil

In 1998, plants of Catharanthus roseus (periwinkle) showing small leaves, short internodes and dieback symptoms were observed in a garden at the Instituto Agronomic do Parana, Londrina, in Brazil. Analysis revealed the presence of Xylella fastidiosa (EPPO A1 quarantine pest). The authors pointed out that this is the first time that X. fastidiosa is found on C. roseus in Brazil. However, this had already been observed in USA, but affected plants showed there different symptoms (marginal chlorosis, occasional vein clearing and wilting).
