Report of the Dutch variant of Meloidogyne chitwoodi in a glasshouse in France
In the Western part of France, a Meloidogyne species was found on tomatoes grown in one glasshouse. It was found that the host range included cereals (such as wheat but not maize), potatoes, tomatoes, beet, lucerne, artichoke, lettuce etc. The host range characteristics, together with isoenzyme patterns and the use of digestion enzymes, showed that the nematode species found is different from Meloidogyne chitwoodi (EPPO A2 quarantine pest) and from other Meloidogyne species (M. arenaria, M. hapla, M. incognita, M. javanica, M. naasi), but is closely related or identical to the variant of M. chitwoodi discovered in the Netherlands. The later has now been described as M. fallax (see EPPO RS 97/001). This appears to be the first report of M. fallax in France, and so far M. chitwoodi has not been reported in this country.
