Treatments of orchid flowers against Thrips palmi and Frankliniella occidentalis
Studies have been carried out in Hawaii (US) to assess the efficacy and phytotoxicity of postharvest treatments of dendrobium orchids against Thrips palmi (EPPO A1 quarantine pest) and Frankliniella occidentalis (EPPO A2 quarantine pest). Insecticidal dips, isopropyl alcohol dips, insecticidal fogs and hot-water immersion have been tested on dendrobium flowers infested by both thrips species. Although all tested postharvest treatments significantly reduced the mean number of thrips per flower, no treatment provided 100 % mortality. In addition, phytotoxicity was the limiting factor for all tested postharvest treatments.
