Bioefficacy test protocols for tropical pests

FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (Bangkok, TH) will shortly be publishing a set of 10 bioefficacy test protocols on:

  1. Planthoppers in rice
  2. Lepidopterous stemborers in rice
  3. Leafhoppers in rice
  4. Weeds in rice
  5. Plutella xylostella
  6. Alternaria solani and Phvtophthora infestans on tomato
  7. Phytophthora infestans on potato
  8. Weeds in maize
  9. Weeds in sugarcane
  10. Weeds in banana

These protocols, developed with some initial input from EPPO and following a format close to that of the EPPO Guidelines for efficacy evaluation of Plant protection products, have been developed by FAO Regional Office with support from the Malaysian Dept. of Agriculture, the GTZ (technical cooperation of FRG), and Dr P. Van Halteren (Plant Protection Service, NL, and active member of the EPPO Panels for Efficacy Evaluation). They have been reviewed and adjusted within southeast Asia through a regional workshop held in Malaysia in 1988.

A further set of 15 protocols has been prepared following the same format by the Malaysian Dept. of Agriculture, Kuala Lumpur (MY), with the support of the GTZ. They concern:

  1. Seedbugs in rice
  2. Whorl maggot (Hydrella philippina) in rice
  3. Black bug (Scotinophara coarctata) in rice
  4. Leaf folders in rice
  5. Foliar fungal diseases in rice
  6. Sheath blight (Thanatephorus cucumeris) in rice
  7. Webworm (Hellula undalis) and heartworm (Crocidolomia binotalis) in cabbage
  8. Flea beetle (Phyllotreta sinuata) in crucifers
  9. Colletotrichum capsici and C. acutatum on chilli
  10. Scale insects in citrus
  11. Spider mites (Tetranychidae)
  12. Blue mould (Peronospora tabacina) of tobacco
  13. Weeds in oil palm and rubber
  14. Weeds in Phaseolus, Pisum and Vigna
  15. Phytotoxicity assessment

All these protocols should in due course form part of an internationally harmonized set, which should contribute towards the transportability of efficacy data among tropical countries, like the EPPO Guidelines in Europe and the Mediterranean area.
