Diuraphis noxia in the U.S.A.
D. noxia, the Russian wheat aphid, was noticed in Mexico in the early 1980's and was found in Texas (US) in 1986. It has now been reported from 15 U.S. States and can cause considerable damage to small grain cereals, wheat, barley, oats, rice and rye; in Colorado alone it is reported to account for losses exceeding 30 million US dollars. Various research agencies are seeking control solutions and it is thought that biological control may prove to be the most fruitful. Natural enemies are being sought especially in Southern Russia and Turkey where D. noxia is not considered to be a primary pest, indicating that it may be under biological control in these countries.
