Presence of Globodera pallida in Portugal
As indicated in the EPPO data sheet, Globodera rostochiensis has been recognized present in Portugal for many years, but not G. pallida.
In 1983, a project was started by Abreu & Martins to survey all potatogrowing areas in Trás-os-Montes, in the north of Portugal. Up till now, over 1000 soil samples have been collected and the cysts extracted by means of the Fenwick can. Of these, 35 samples have now been studied. Twenty cysts were examined from each population and 10-20 juveniles from each cyst, and the species identified on the basis of morphological and morphometrical data on second-stage juveniles and cysts (Stone, 1975).
Both G. rostochiensis and G. pallida were identified. The two species were found together in fourteen samples, G. rostochiensis alone in twenty and G. pallida alone in one. Further field and laboratory work is in progress to get information on geographical distribution, pathotypes of the nematodes and assessment of the damage caused to potatoes by the nematodes.
