New record of Hyphantria cunea in Greece
Hyphantria cunea Drury is reported for the first time from Greece, in Thrace, along the river Evros close to the Turkish border .The insect was feeding on the leaves of mulberry grown for silkwormrearing.
Urgent chemical control measures were taken by the Plant Protection Service, using organophosphates (mevinphos, Lebaycid (fenthion) and Dimecron (phosphamidon)), carbamates (Sevin 85% (carbaryl)) and Decis. Lebaycid, Dimecron and Sevin gave good results for only the first larval instar, while all larval instars were controlled with mevinphos and Decis. Two generations of the insect occurred during spring and summer.
All necessary measures have been taken to control the insect in spring 1980, if the need arises, by air- or ground-sprays with Bacillus thuringiensis and Decis.
