First report of Pseudomonas syringae pv. aesculi in Ireland
The NPPO of Ireland recently informed the EPPO Secretariat about the presence of Pseudomonas syringae pv. aesculi (EPPO Alert List) on its territory. The bacterium was detected on horse chestnut trees (Aesculus hippocastanum) in a public park (Phoenix Park) in Dublin. In this park, horse chestnut trees account for 9% of the tree cover (1,800 trees), the majority of which are mature trees. The park management observed a decline in the health of a small portion of these trees, and the presence of P. syringae pv. aesculi was confirmed. In order to prevent the spread of the horse chestnut bleeding canker, best practice guidelines have been put into place for the removal and burial of the diseased trees. A survey of the entire horse chestnut population in the park is being undertaken to assess the number of affected trees and the extent of the symptoms on individual trees.
