According to Cabrera & Scholthof (1999), St Augustine decline is considered to be caused by an infection with PMV, alone or in combination with satellite panicum mosaic virus (SPMV) and/or its satellite RNAs (satRNAs).
PMV was first found in 1953 in Kansas on Panicum virgatum, and in 1966 on Stenotaphrum secundatum in Texas. PMV was then reported on S. secundatum in Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Mexico.
