First found in USA in 1977/1978 in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. Outbreaks are occasionally reported but are always subject to eradication measures.

Studies done on a few plants which had been found infected in 2010 in 6 outdoor garden locations in University Park (Pennsylvania) showed that the fungus could overwinter in Pennsylvania (the disease was observed again in 2012).
