Cucurbit yellow vine disease was first observed in squash and pumpkin in 1988 in Oklahoma and Texas. It was later found in other cucurbit crops (watermelon, melon) and other US states. In 2003, it was demonstrated that the causal agent is Serratia marcescens, a phloem-colonizing bacterium transmitted by Anasa tristis (Heteroptera: Coreidae).
