A. esculentus is known only as a cultivated plant. It probably originated in southern Asia (India, Indochina), from where it was taken in ancient times to China, Malesia, most of Africa (except Ethiopia, Somalia, Namibia, Cape), and post-Columbus, to USA, Caribbean, South America (northwest). In Eurasia, it is cultivated at least in the area of Russia, Black Sea, Caucasus and Central Asia
