Amaranthus hybridus(AMACH)
Overview Code created in: 2004-04-10
- EPPO Code: AMACH
- Preferred name: Amaranthus hybridus
- Authority: Linnaeus
Canada (Ontario), USA (eastern), Mexico, Central America, South America (northwestern). Widespread as a weed in warmer parts of the world. Introduced in Euromediterranean region, Western Asia (Arabia to Pakistan), Himalayas, India, Sri Lanka, Indochina (except Myanmar), China, Japan, Korea, Africa (except Mauretania, Niger, Somalia, Mozambique), Canada (British Columbia, Québec), USA (western), Caribbean, South America (beyond its original range), Australia (except Tasmania).
A. hybridus is the wild progenitor of several cultivated amaranths: A. caudatus, A. cruentus (q.v.), A. hypochondriacus (q.v.). These plants are grown as ornamentals or for their grain, they do not exist in the wild, and are not weeds. A. patulus Bertoloni is a spreading form of A. hybridus.
There is continuing disagreement whether the correct name for the whole complex should be A. hybridus or A. cruentus. The situation appears to be inextricable.
