Brassica napus(BRSNN)
Overview Code created in: 2004-04-10
- EPPO Code: BRSNN
- Preferred name: Brassica napus
- Authority: Linnaeus
Probably originated as a hybrid between B. oleracea and B. rapa, but area of origin uncertain. It has probably existed as a weed in Europe since ancient times. The type subspecies is the widely cultivated plant developed from it, for the production of oilseed. The English name "canola" is given to cultivars with a low erucic acid content, but is also used in the same way for other Brassica oil crops. Draft genome sequence published in 2009.
