Notes

Mexico, Central America, Caribbean, South America (northern to Bolivia). Cultivated for "kapok",  the fine silk contained in the capsules, now replaced by synthetic materials because of its flammability. Other uses exist for the wood and seeds (oil, seed cake). Introduced in Western Asia (Yemen), India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Indochina, Malesia (Sulawesi), Sénégal to Somalia, Guinée to Nigeria, Cameroon, Gabon, Zaïre, East Africa, Angola to Mozambique
