Native to Mexico, Central America. Cultivated for its fruits consumed as a vegetable. The dried ground spice is obtained from C. frutescens (q.v.), but some authors combine the two species. Introduced in Mediterranean region, Central Asia, Western Asia, Himalayas, India, Bangladesh, Indochina (except Thailand), Malesia (except Sumatra, Malaya, southeastern islands), Korea, most of Africa (except southern), Madagascar, USA (southeastern), Caribbean, South America (northern half), New Guinea, Australia (Northern, Queensland, New South Wales).
