Mal secco was first reported in Israel in 1930, but it was most likely present in the area long before because typical symptoms of the disease in lemons and citrons had been noted by growers many years earlier. Genetic studies suggested that the entire Israeli population of the fungus probably descended from one common ancestor (Ezra et al., 2007).
