P. croceum is often regarded as a form of P. nudicaule (q.v.), but Russian sources distinguish the species, both of which are reported to occur in Siberia. Flora Alpina reports P. croceum in the Alps, and equates it to P. nudicaule. The situation is further confused by the existence of numerous cultivars
