Eastern Europe, Caucasus, Russian Far East. Cultivated like R. uva-crispa. Introduced in China. The two subspecies are both said to be parents of cultivated gooseberry varieties. However, it seems that the Russian and western European interpretations differ and there may be no good reason for separating the subspecies
