Sénégal to Ethiopia. A species raised in cultivation in Saharan and eastern Africa, which exists in a great number of varieties, many of which have been given separate scientific names. Introduced in Euromediterranean region, Russian Far East, Central Asia, Western Asia, Himalayas, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Indochina, Malesia, China, Japan, Central Africa, Madagascar, USA, Mexico, Central America, Caribbean, South America (northwest, Brazil), New Zealand.
