Notes

All Europe, Black Sea, Russia, Siberia, Russian Far East, Central Asia, China, Japan. The nominate subspecies is diploid, whereas the others (q.v.) are tetraploid or octoploid (and are restricted to Europe). Cultivated as an ornamental and medicinal plant. Introduced in North America and elsewhere. The forms occurring in non-European Russia have been considered as separate species in the Russian literature, but are now combined with V. officinalis
