Notes

Mediterranean and Central Europe, Central Asia. Var. vinifera is the cultivated grapevine selected in ancient times within this area, as distinguished from var. sylvestris (q.v.). Now cultivated in suitable climates worldwide. In Europe and the Mediterranean area, it occasionally persists as a relic of cultivation, particularly in localities free from the introduced root pest Daktulosphaira vitifoliae (phylloxera).  In any case, V. vinifera is practically always grafted on an American phylloxera-resistant rootstock, so naturalized plants are more likely to be the rootstock species.
